On 2 October 2019, Club Foam visits the studio of Dani&euml;lle van Ark.

How does a work of art acquire value and meaning? What are the processes at play? And what is the artist&rsquo;s role in all of this? These are the recurrent themes in the oeuvre of Dani&euml;lle van Ark (Schiedam, 1974). During the studio visit she will talk about her work and the preparation for the exhibition that opens on 12 October in her gallery.
This visit is exclusively for Club Foam members and takes place between 19.30 and 21.00 hrs.

On Thursday 19 April, you are invited to attend the public opening of two new exhibitions:

The exhibition Gold and Silver offers a modern-day look at the nineteenth century gold rush in the United States. Contemporary projections, nineteenth century daguerreotypes and albumen photographs allow you to travel along the rivers of California and across the snow-covered mountaintops of the Yukon to fathom the ambitions, dreams and illusions of an entire generation of gold seekers.
The exhibition is on view until 10 June.

In addition to Van Ark&rsquo;s most recent works, the exhibition includes a site-specific installation that was developed specifically for the Foam gallery space. In it, the artist reflects on the museum context in which her work is displayed &ndash; or kept from view.

Public opening: Daniëlle van Ark & Gold and Silver

On 20 April, in conjunction with her solo exhibition at Foam, artist Dani&euml;lle van Ark will go into conversation with Foam curator Hinde Haest.

To what extent does a photograph really immortalize its subject? How does an image acquire &ndash; or lose &ndash; value and meaning over time? What mechanisms lie at the basis of such valuation? And where does it leave the artist?
Visitors will gain insight into Van Ark&rsquo;s versatile practice, which &ndash; besides photographs &ndash; includes photo-based collages, sculptures and spatial interventions. She will elaborate on her use of existing image archives, such as early 20th-century bridal photographs and newspaper archives, with which she reflects on the ephemeral and material nature of the photograph. During the evening the artist will also discuss her new site-specific installation, that was developed specifically for the Foam gallery space. With it, she reflects on the museum context in which her work is displayed &ndash; or kept from view.
Artist, curator and audience will be able to engage in an informal discussion and there will be ample time for questions. The walking tour will conclude with drinks at Foam Editions. The exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/danielle-van-ark">Dani&euml;lle van Ark &ndash; Artist&rsquo;s Proof</a> is on view at Foam from 20 April until 10 June&nbsp;2018.
ABOUT&nbsp;DANI&Euml;LLE VAN ARK Dani&euml;lle van Ark (Schiedam, 1974) studied at The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. Her work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2006 Foam exhibited her first solo exhibition,&nbsp;For Art&rsquo;s Sake, in Foam 3h. Her work was displayed in Museum van Loon in Amsterdam in 2012, as part of the collaborative project&nbsp;Foam in Van Loon. In 2014 her work was featured in the Foam collection exhibition&nbsp;Reflected, Works From the Collection. Van Ark&rsquo;s work is included in the collections of Foam, De Nederlandsche Bank, ABN AMRO, De Brauw, LUMC, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, AMC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Museum Voorlinden, and various private collections. Dani&euml;lle van Ark lives and works in Amsterdam and is represented by tegenboschvanvreden.

Walk and Talk with Daniëlle van Ark

Foam presents the work of photographer Dani&euml;lle van Ark in the exhibition Artist&rsquo;s Proof.

For Dutch artist Dani&euml;lle van Ark (1974) photography is the most ephemeral of all media. With the development of steadily more advanced reproduction technologies, the expiration date of a photograph seems to diminish exponentially. Where the photograph was a unique and precious item in the nineteenth century, today everyone can record and reproduce memories at just a push of a button. But amidst the deluge of fleeting images produced and consumed every day, to what extent can something or someone still be truly immortalised?

Van Ark is interested in the opaque systems of value creation in an era where everything seems to have become reproducible. Scouring flea markets and online auction sites, she acquired antiquated image archives that formed the starting point for new work. No image was sacred in the process, and the rear side, the printer&rsquo;s proof and the negative were considered just as significant as the final reproduction. Her own archive was subjected to the same scrutiny: works she produced in the past were deconstructed and reused with the same unscrupulous rigour.
Artists&rsquo; Proof contains works from Van Ark&rsquo;s most recent series. Common premise is the volatile meaning and value of the photograph as a reproducible art form. In addition to her most recent work, the exhibition presents an installation created specifically for Foam&rsquo;s exhibition rooms. The installation consists of &lsquo;old&rsquo; work, which is &lsquo;stored&rsquo; on depot carts and shelves in the museum. Her installation is a playful protest against the power of the curator to position her work in the public eye &ndash; or to withhold it from view.
The exhibition opens on Thursday 19 April 2018, in the presence of the artist. You are welcome from 5.30 pm onwards.

On the occasion of his solo exhibition, Foam&nbsp;invites&nbsp;the celebrated American photographer&nbsp;Alec Soth to&nbsp;introduce his new series&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/alec-soth-i-know-how-furiously-your-heart-is-beating">I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating</a>&nbsp;(2017-2019).&nbsp;The series was the result of an extended period of introspection and slowing down. Soth will go into conversation&nbsp;with the exhibition curator Hinde Haest&nbsp;to give an insight into&nbsp;his recent personal and professional transition, his sources of inspiration and working process.&nbsp;
Foam is the first museum to present this new series, consisting of 35 intimate portraits of people in their private homes.&nbsp;The series forms a&nbsp;new chapter in Soth's&nbsp;oeuvre and marks&nbsp;a departure from earlier projects. It stands for a personal search for connection and deceleration of his working&nbsp;process. Instead of focusing on a place, a community or demography,&nbsp;Soth&nbsp;concentrated on&nbsp;remarkable&nbsp;individuals and their private settings. Unlike many of Soth&rsquo;s previous visual narratives, the choice of geographical location was not preconceived, but the result of a series of chance encounters. The conversation will delve deeper into how he experiences&nbsp;his search for human connection,&nbsp;the people and things that&nbsp;motivated and inspired him,&nbsp;and how he reflects on the current social changes.

In a recent interview for Foam Magazine, he states: "I&rsquo;m a project-based photographer and I have never been the kind that needs to make pictures every day. So, in between projects I am processing what&rsquo;s happening, and even though it looks like downtime, it&rsquo;s important work.&nbsp;I feel like we&rsquo;re all kind of being forced to do this important work right now - culturally, socially and environmentally. Re-evaluate our role in the world and how we go about things."
