Awoiska van der Molen

Foam organises a special visit the studio of artist Awoiska van der Molen in Amsterdam.

The exhibition Blanco is currently on show in Foam. It is the first major museum-based solo exhibition by Awoiska van der Molen (b. Groningen, 1972), featuring the monochrome landscape photography she has been working on since 2009.
Van der Molen&rsquo;s work, which was shown in 2007 in Foam 3h, garnered a great deal of praise last summer at the Unseen Photo Fair, where she presented new work. Foam shows a broad selection of her handmade gelatin silver prints, mostly in large format. During the afternoon&nbsp;we visit her studio in Amsterdam and Awoiska van der Molen explains how she approaches her work.
This visit has limited availablity and takes place from 15.00 to 16.30 hrs. There are only twenty places available.&nbsp;

Foam offers Foam Fund shareholders the unique opportunity to visit the studio of artist Awoiska van der Molen.

Foam starts the new year with <a href="/museum/programme/awoiska-van-der-molen">Blanco</a>, the first major museum-based solo exhibition by Awoiska van der Molen (b. Groningen, 1972), featuring the monochrome landscape photography she has been working on since 2009. Van der Molen&rsquo;s work, which was shown in 2007 in Foam 3h, garnered a great deal of praise last summer at the Unseen Photo Fair, where she presented new work. Foam shows a broad selection of her handmade gelatin silver prints, mostly in large format. During the evening we visit her studio in Amsterdam and Awoiska van der Molen explains how she approaches her work. Foam Fund visits Awoiska van der Molen

From 22 January until 2 April 2016 Foam presented Blanco, the first major museum-based solo exhibition by Awoiska van der Molen (b. Groningen, 1972), featuring her monochrome landscape photography. 

Van der Molen&rsquo;s work, which was shown in 2007 at&nbsp;<a href="/talent/foam-3h">Foam 3h</a>, garnered a great deal of praise at the 2015 edition of Unseen Photo Fair, where she presented new work. In this exhibition, Foam showcases a broad selection of her handmade gelatin silver prints, mostly in large format.

The exhibition Blanco&nbsp;was the result of long periods of isolation, in which Awoiska van der Molen penetrated deep into the essence of the remote world in which she creates her photos. Far removed from a society racing ever onwards, she takes time to experience the landscape in a new manner, beyond first appearances. She moves slowly there, returns repeatedly and by doing so makes these unknown places her own. This gradual and solitary working process continues in the darkroom. Her often profoundly black baryta prints contain mysterious contrasts between darkness and light. Notions of time, day and night seem non-existent.
ABOUT AWOISKA VAN DER MOLEN In 2007 Awoiska van der Molen&rsquo;s work was shown at Foam 3h in the form of the black-and-white series Maintained Ground, which concentrated on abandoned places in and around the city. Her work is always mysterious, hushed and devoid of people. Van der Molen studied various subjects including architecture and photography at the Academie Minerva Beeldende Kunst &amp; Vormgeving in Groningen. Her first photobook, Sequester, published in September 2014, was nominated for the Paris Photo / Aperture First Book Prize and won the silver medal in the &lsquo;Most Beautiful Book in the World&rsquo; competition at the Leipzig Book Fair. Awoiska van der Molen is represented by Kristof de Clercq Gallery in Ghent and Purdy Hicks Gallery in London. In 2017 Awoiska van der Molen was nominated for the prestigious <a href="https://www.deutscheboersephotographyfoundation.org/en/support/photography-prize/2017.php">Deutsche B&ouml;rse Photography Prize</a>&nbsp;for her solo exhibition at Foam.

For extended periods of time, Van der Molen moves through deserted nature, wanders around, sleeps outside; she really takes time to experience the landscape in a different manner, beyond its initial appearance. Thus, she slowly uncovers the identity of the places, and reveals their specific emotional and physical qualities. This approach results in delicate and profound photographs of nature, still while simultaneously full of life.

This gradual and solitary working process is her way to produce her images, and continues in the darkroom. Indeed, she prints her analogue photographs by hand - her dark baryta prints contain mysterious contrasts between darkness and light.

Awoiska van der Molen&rsquo;s approach to nature in her images can best be described as &lsquo;sensuous&rsquo;. In the evening of February 18, Foam organizes a session on sensing the landscape through the artist&rsquo;s lens. 
Awoiska van der Molen seeks landscapes in which nature is dominant &ndash; where she can allow herself to be &lsquo;absorbed, devoured, but also protected&rsquo; by the landscape. She invites the viewer to experience her photos with a sensitivity similar to that which she feels herself when photographing her landscapes. Within this framework landscape philosopher Eric Brinckmann will let his thoughts run free in a personal reading of her work. Maartje van den Heuvel, researcher and curator of photography at Leiden University, will deliver a lecture in which she will place Van der Molen&rsquo;s artistic practice in an art historical context. In response to this, Foam curator Mirjam Kooiman will go into a dialogue with the artist, followed by a panel discussion. Of course there is opportunity for the audience to ask questions. ABOUT ERIC BRINCKMANN Eric Brinckmann is a landscape philosopher and director of the Lankheet Estate in Haaksbergen. He studied law and philosophy at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He has worked for various educational institutions , consulting firms and was involved in several landscape projects. He gives lectures and courses on the philosophy of the landscape and is the author of the recently published guide Filosofische wandelingen: denken over binnen en buiten door de eeuwen heen [Philosophical walks: thinking about inside and outside throughout the centuries] (2015).
ABOUT MAARTJE VAN DEN HEUVEL Maartje van den Heuvel is curator of the photo collection of the Special Collections of the Leiden University library - the oldest museological photography collection of the Netherlands. On a regular basis, she is guest curator for museum exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. She is currently finishing her PhD research on contemporary Dutch landscape photography.

Sensing the landscape

Are you a photography enthusiast and do you want to get to work on a concrete photography assignment, inspired by the exhibitions in Foam? Challenge yourself to think differently and take part in our photography workshop!

THEME: EMPTY TOWN This workshop is inspired by the work of Awoiska van der Molen in the exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/awoiska-van-der-molen">Blanco</a>. During the workshop Empty Town you will look for places in the urban environment and by photographing them you will transform these places into a no-man&rsquo;s-land. People are not present, only what we leave behind in architecture, design and daily use. The defining sharp contrasts in black and white are another starting point during the workshop. Foam provides basic compact cameras for this workshop. Of course, you are free to use your own camera if you prefer. In that case, remember to bring a fully charged battery, an empty SD card and a transfer cable. The use of your own materials is at your own risk. There is a limited amount of spots available, so be sure to sign up on time! Tickets are only valid for reserved dates. Unfortunately it is not possible to change dates or cancel without charge after your purchase has been made. Please note: this workshop is in Dutch.
